TikTok, the betrayal and how I am going to Decentralize

It’s difficult, but I encourage everyone to try. I’m in the process of weaning myself off the major social sites. That’s part of the reason I post here now. There are free options available as well. I’ve joined the fediverse, hoping that the future of social media can no longer be controlled by chums with some change. I hope for strong networks where we can learn, laugh, and connect with each other.

I used to think it was just a gimmick to sell crypto. It definitely seemed like a buzzword. I still cringe when someone says “web3.” I’m not entirely sure what’s being built right now is actually web3. It is similar, but more importantly, It’s resilient, a stalwart of sorts, well it’s far from impregnable. I do like what I’m seeing, and I’m excited to watch the fediverse unfurl into something beautiful.

I’m just fucking tired of being hurt by websites and apps. I remember The Aviary Creation Suite for the browser—that was my first bitter taste of capitalism and how big companies buy off and crush the smaller ones. Adobe bought Aviary and shut it down, just like that. Then there was Vine. Then Twitter. Now we’ve got the fucking rug-pull of the decade with TikTok. I honestly feel gross going back to it. And don’t even get me started on YouTube—it’s nothing like it used to be. The homogenization of channels is disgusting. It used to be like shitty little Myspace pages, full of personality and chaos. Now it’s just corporate nonsense.

Bottom line, we need to decentralize. Let’s educate ourselves on the fediverse and inject some humanity back into this digital mess we’ve created. I’ve already started with Pixelfed and Mastodon. Bluesky is already becoming compatible with another fediverse. It’s time to ditch Meta, TikTok, and Twitter (no, I’m not calling it fucking X).
